It is said that necessity is the mother of invention, well that’s true for the Snowy Day Hat. Let me explain… we woke up to about 2 feet of snow in our little corner of New York this morning, and my husband and son dutifully went out to shovel us out. They donned their warm hats (made by yours truly) and headed out. I took one look at my husband and gasped! His hat barely reached his ears!!
Turns out, the 100% wool hat I’d made him last winter, somehow got thrown into the wash and is now more appropriately sized for a child 🙂 Well I couldn’t let that man go out in the cold with his ears exposed, could I? Super wife to the rescue! I rummaged through my stash of worsted weight yarns and found a nice navy, grey and white and proceeded to whip up the Snowy Day Hat. When I gave him the hat he said “It’s perfect!” and thanked me for making it in his favorite team colors too….I didn’t have the heart to tell him that was purely by accident 😉
The Snowy Day hat is a very quick crochet in simple half double and single crochet stitches with just a little bit of fun in the stripe and band sections. I wrote it up in two sizes (adult and kids) but it can easily be sized so have fun.
Oh…and while I designed this for my husband, it would work up beautifully for the girls too!

I am a newbie and want to try this pattern for my hubby but I am stuck on one thing. I understand all of the abbreviations but what do you mean by “join” at the end of a row?
PatternParadise says
Hi there and welcome. As noted in the pattern, you will join each round by making a slip stitch in the first stitch of that round. Hope that helps.
Lorraine says
My son has a big head, so it could have been longer. Do you have a matching scarf pattern?
PatternParadise says
I do not have a matching scarf pattern. As for the length, you can certainly add a few rounds if you would like it longer.

Thank you Maria, for sharing this pattern, it looks like it’s going to keep a lot of people warm this winter. I like another commenter’s idea to use this pattern incorporating team colors into it. A++++! Go Las Vegas Golden Knights! and Las Vegas Raiders! and L.A. Dodgers! lol
(Time to get my hook on!)
