This month’s X Stitch Challenge crochet pattern is the Garden Tank Top.
I designed this crochet pattern with the treble versions of the X stitch, offset with basic half double and double crochet it renders a nice texture, don’t you think?

The scooped neckline is flattering and very comfortable to wear and although this is designed as a wear alone piece, it could easily work over another tank or even as a vest. You can also make a drawstring (here’s a tutorial) tie and weave it around the waistline for a different and fun look. I made this top with Valley Yarns Greenfield yarn and I loved working with this yarn, and enjoy the sheen it gives.

Hi! I’m trying to get this started. I always struggle with patterns that ask to connect a chain to format a circle. I finally got it to not twist but I’m not sure about my first half double crochet. Would that be in the first chain which I slipped stitched into in order to format a circle or would it be the very next one next to it??
PatternParadise says
It would be in the same one where you joined. You could also start with a foundation single crochet if you like.

Please help! I started the “Garden Tank” and do not understand Row 7, I have 2 strands of 26 chains hanging on each end of the bodice on the first row, what do I do with them? Thank you in advance for your help.
PatternParadise says
As noted at the end of Row 7, those chains will form the underarm section. Row 8 instructs to work in those chains to form the first row under the arm. Hope that helps.

Not at this time. 🙂

Valley Yarns Greenfield is not available, could you suggest a few other yarns? Thanks I appreciate it. I love your patterns!
admin says
Valley Yarns Greenfield is an Aran weight yarn, so you should be able to use anything in that weight and adjust the hook to meet gauge (if necessary). Here is a website that helps with yarn substitutions:

Harriett Brunke says
I think the tank top is beautiful but I like to make it for a size large how do I know how to do that, or figure out how to do the stitches for different sizes
admin says
Hi Harriett, You’d have to adjust the stitch counts using the gauge as your guide to get to the finished measurements you need. I may add other sizing at a later date and include them in a paid pattern, but the free version is only one size.
Linnette says
It’s very beautiful. I will trying this.

thank you

I am new to crochet. This top looks like something I could do. I just need to know, when you refer to BLO, is that the back bump you refer to in the picture?
admin says
Actually, no it would be the top loop in this picture. The easiest way to determine is to look at your crochet stitches from the top. You will see that each stitch (which looks like a v) has a front portion and a back portion. Usually we crochet through both of those loops, but to achieve different effects, we sometimes crochet in the Front Loop or the Back Loop only. Hope that helps.

I just finished this tank top. It looks very nice but for some reason the bottom is tighter than the top lol. Otherwise I’m happy with my first attempt at a top!
admin says
Perhaps your tension got tighter as you worked?
Sandra Berg says
thank you, you are right. I will try again.
Sandra Berg says

Hello, I was wondering if I could do a foundation hdc chain for rd 1, join it, and still get the same result? I guess I misread/misunderstood the directions because I ended up with 121 stitches, but didn’t realize till I got to the end of rd 2 & had 61 trXst. I apparently worked a hdc in the ch1 and the 120 joined chains. Since I will have to rip out rd 2 & the hdc of rd 1, I was hoping to be able to restart with a hdc foundation chain. Thank you for any suggestions! Melissa.
admin says
Hi Melissa, I have not tested the pattern with the Fhdc, but I think it should work!
Paula says
How many more chains do I add for a bust size 40″ – 42″.
admin says
I have not tested the bigger sizing. The gauge is 4dc per inch, so you could try adding based on that and adjust as necessary.
Caz says
Hi Maria,
I hope you don’t mind, but I’ve written out a version (with colour and other minor changes) in XXXXL/size 24 as I made one for a friend. Well, actually it was going to be for me, but I miscalculated 🙂 Could I email you the larger version to approve before I post it to my blog, please? It’s not infringing your copyright as far as I can tell, but I just wanted you to have the chance to point out anything re that which I may have overlooked. Many thanks for your pattern, which I’m now going to make as per your instructions as it’s probably the size I needed, using the same hook as for the larger… Maybe lol
admin says
I’m so glad you like my pattern. I’m sorry, but that does infringe my copyright. What would work well, would be if you would post just the alterations you made, with a link to my pattern. For instance, instead of ch 32, you could say “I used a ch 60”. You could blog about your changes with a link to my pattern, but I’m afraid posting an entire version of the full pattern, even in a different size, would be an illegal copyright violation. I look forward to reading your blog post.
Paula says
Thank you.
Caz says
Hi :),
Sorry – I should have said in my comment above that I haven’t done more than link back to your pattern and what I’m hoping to post is (as you’ve said in your reply to me) just the alterations I’ve made without any part of your pattern. Could I please just send you what I’d like to post on my site so that you can see it is as per your reply above. From what you’ve said, what I have in mind is fine, but as I’ve never done this before I just wanted you to look at it and make sure I’ve credited you correctly etc. Thanks 🙂

I just bought your Royal Palm Tank Top pattern and then followed back to your site, where I saw this top…which I also love! Not sure I can make both before I run out of summer to wear them in, but I do believe I’m going to try! Thank you!
admin says
LOL, they both work up quickly and of course you can always save them for next year. I hope you enjoy the patterns 🙂
Kimberly says
I’m making this lovely tank top right now! However, I’m on row 5 and I do not end up with 180 hdc. How can you when in row 2 you end up with 60 trXSt and row 4 you end up with 90 trXSt. If you do a hdc in each stich and space (3 hdc for each trXSt) you end up with more than 180. Help please!!! What am I missing???
admin says
There is no chain 1 between the trebles in R4, therefore, you will only have 180 stitches in total.
Alexandra says
This is such a beautiful top! I think I may just pull out some of my cotton yarn and get started. I really like the neckline. Would also love if you shared this at our Yarn Fanatic Party – http://eyeloveknots.blogspot.com/2015/07/yarn-fanatic-party-44.html.
