Materials:
I used Sugar ‘n Cream Cotton, 2 colors, half skeins of each color
7” zipper
Gauge:
Hook US H – (5.0 mm)
14 sts, 12 Rows in houndstooth pattern = 4”
Size:
Approximately 7” x 4 ½”
Abbreviations:
beg beginning
ch chain
dc double crochet
sc single crochet
sl st slip stitch
st(s) stitch(es)
Do not fasten off for each color change; instead, carry the yarn not in use on the wrong side. You will turn and change colors each row.
Join each row with sl st to beg st. Ch1 at beginning of row does not count as stitch.
Row 1(Right Side): With Color 1, ch25, 3sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 22 ch, 3 sc in last ch, working around opposite side of beg ch, sc in each ch, join. (50 sts)
Row 2: Join Color 2, ch1, turn, [sc in next st, dc in next st] repeat around to end, join. (50 sts) Note: you will work a sc in each dc and a dc in each sc, your- last st worked will be in the beg ch1.
Rows 3 – 13: Repeat Row 2 alternating colors for each row.
Row 14: With Color 2, ch1, turn, sc in same st and each remaining st to end, join. Fasten off. (50)
Mark the sides of the tote. Note: Your join st should be on a side seam, if it is not, fasten off and join at a side seam.
Row 15: Sl st next st, sc next 22 sts, sl st next 3 sts, sc next 22 sts, sl st last st. Fasten off. This will create the “tab” where you will sew the zipper. Fasten off.
To Sew in Zipper:
Choose a zipper to fit the opening, or slightly longer, turn down the tab of the zipper as shown and pin into place. Using thread and needle, sew with short stitches in place on one side and then repeat on other side. Tuck tail end of zipper into the purse and stitch across top back to secure in place. I also slip stitch the inside bottom of the zipper tabs in place for a neater finish. You can tie a few strands of yarn or other “pull” of your choice to the end of the zipper. This is a great place for some pretty beads too.
To Make the Handle:
Join yarn at side of purse (I like to do it on the side with the zipper tab when it is closed), ch40, sl st to same st as join, now working around chain, sl st in each ch, join to purse. Fasten off.
Flower:
Start with a Magic Circle, ch1, 10 sc in loop, join; pull ends tight to close opening.
Join new color, ch1, [(sc, hdc, 2dc, hdc, sc) in next st, skip next ch] 5 times, join to beg sc.
To line the bag, you can use my tutorial as a guide, find it here.

The clutch hand bag is handy and comfortable for on the run/go for a quick getaway I think I will try the other yarn to see how it looks.

Great!

you can sew the zipper in like sewing zipper in a normal fabric bag/purse, i sew mine with the machine
Mary says
I’m not sure I know how to use the crochet tabs to sew in the zipper. I’ve put zippers in crochet items before but never used a tab for it. Any advice? Thanks!
admin says
You can search on google for a tutorial or you tube video for additional guidance, but basically you will just sew the purse into the fabric sides of the zipper.
susan nash says
She’s simply referring to the fabric surrounding the zipper as tabs unless I”m totally missing this, and you just pin it into place like usual and hand sew it in. There is no other way to sew in a zipper in this situation! I hope that helps you 🙂

You are correct Susan!

My question is…if you turn after the chain 1, it seems to me that you are going back in the direction you just came from so the rows are not joined. I tried this pattern and don’t understand how you can turn and have the rows joined? I bought 3 colors of yarn and am now stuck with a big oval.
Thanks if you can help me out!
admin says
Yes, you join first, then turn to work back the same way you came from, join again and work back in the opposite direction.

I HAVE MADE TWO…ADORABLE. HOWEVER, THEY COME OUT LARGER ..USING THE SAME THREAD AND A SMALLER HOOK. ONE QUESTION I HAVE IS IF THERE ARE 25 CHAINS AND YOU DO 3 STITCHES IN 2ND CH…22 STITCHES AND THEN 3 STITCHES BEFORE TURNING …DOESN’T THAT ADD UP TO 28 STITCHES ON ONE SIDE AND 25 ON THE OTHER SIDE OF CHAIN ? 53 STITCHES INSTEAD OF 50…AM I BEING STUPID OR WHAT?
thepatternparadise says
Thank you so much for you note. The size may come out larger due to gauge, everyone crochets a little differently even with the same yarn/hook combination, you can decrease the starting chain by 1 chain for each reduction of 2 stitches that you want and adjust the size that way if you like. To answer your question of stitch count, I’ve actually added a picture to pattern, take a look and hopefully that answers the question.

I’m still confused… what is working in rounds? There are only 23 stitches to begin with so how do we add more after row 1 in order to obtain 50 stitches??? Await your help!
thepatternparadise says
You work around both sides of that beginning chain stitch, that way you have stitches on both sides and on the ends. The row is joined to the beginning stitch and you continue to work up in the same manner. Here is a photo tutorial that shows you how it is done. I hope that helps

Thank you for the quick response! The tutorial was perfect and I have now learned something new. This may take me a few tries to get it right but this clutch is sooo cute!!!

My second try… It came out beautifully! My niece is going to love this birthday gift… Thank you for the cute pattern… The best part is it took only two hours to make zipper n lining included…
Alicia says
I’m confused as well… On rounds 3-13 you do them all one color or are you switching the colors in every row, so you have yellow, white, yellow, white? I really wish there were pictures cause it find that pictures help. Also when you done with the entire clutch do you fold in half to put the zipper? Thank you so much
thepatternparadise says
Hi Alicia,
Yes, you will change colors for each row as noted in the general directions. I’ve now also added it to those rows for further clarification. The bag is worked in rounds so when you are done there is no need to fold in half, it will already be a pocket with the top opening for the zipper. Hope that helps 🙂
Alicia says
Ok.. Thank you. I did it wrong. Lol but it turned out ok for my first clutch ever. Thanks again for the clarification.
Katie says
This bag is so cute! I’m about to do the zipper and lining. (I’ve never sewed anything to my crochet before. Yikes!) I’m wondering if you sew the zipper on first then the lining or the other way around. Thanks for such a cute pattern!
thepatternparadise says
Hi Katie, that’s an excellent question. You would add the zipper first and then the liner. The liner would actually overlap the tabs of the zipper slightly so that you have a neat finish. If you need a tutorial on how to construct the liner, I have one that you can use as a guide.https://pattern-paradise.com/2014/06/12/tutorial-how-to-line-a-crocheted-bag/
Anna Eddleman says
I’m confused, are we working from side to side, top to bottom or continuous rounds to the top or bottom ?????
thepatternparadise says
Hi Anna,
To make the clutch, you start with a chain and then work in rounds from bottom to top. Hope that helps.
Kara says
Love this little clutch!
Hellen says
Hy! Why is it necessary to “turn” at the begining of the second row? Is it necessary for all folowing rows?
admin says
The turns lines the stitches up and provides the alternating texture to achieve the houndstooth look. Yes, the instructions state to repeat row 2 so that would include the turn.
admin says
Thanks!
