When I first started designing patterns, I sometimes struggled to figure out the correct sizing for various pieces. After some research and much trial and error, I’ve collected a set of guidelines that I now use routinely when designing a pattern. I’m happy to share them with you and will post them  in the Tips & Tricks section of my blog for future reference too.
The chart below is written in inches, however, I’m sure it will be a quick conversion for my metric friends.
I hope you find these useful, I’d love your feedback!

Hi – thank you so much for this chart. Can I check, you’re using these as body measurements, not finished garment sizes? They are off by a couple of inches compared to yarn council measurements, so I was thinking you had already factored in ease. Wanted to check. It is really hard to find a reliable set of standard baby measurements!
Many thanks
Julia
PatternParadise says
Yes, I use these as body measurements based on my own experience. You are right, they are slightly different from Yarn Council. I generally use their measurements as a starting point and tweak as I need to.

Bless your heart, I love your sizing chart. I’m not a crotcheter but I sew and I’m always trying to make my own patterns and styles, it’s such a hassle to look up each time and age- you’re awesome!
PatternParadise says
Aww thanks! I’m glad you find it useful.
Sonia says
Great size chart. Still wondering are these actual body or garment size?
PatternParadise says
I use these as body measurements and then add an inch or two for ease depending upon the look of the garment. Again these are just a guideline as babies vary greatly at the same age. It is always best to measure the recipient if you can.

Thank you so much for this info. I am trying to crochet a romper for my soon to be born great granddaughter but have no infant around to take measurements from. Would you happen to know how many inches it is from the crotch area to the shoulder? Thank you for any help you are able to give.
PatternParadise says
I’m sorry, I don’t have that measurement.

This’ll be my go to chart from now on I printed A copy for my crochet binder your the best

Hi! Thank you for this very helpful chart! I am working on an newborn dress summer dress. The tube top of the dress begins right under the arms and should go to about the knee. Your chart says 11inches for a knee length dress but I was curious where that measurement began. Is it the base of the neck or the underarm?
admin says
The measurement would be from the base of the neck.

Hello, thank u for sharing this chart its very helpful but, i just have a question can these measurements be used in making patterns from non-stretchy fabric?
admin says
Yes, you can use the same measurements as guidelines however, your ease will have to be adjusted based on your fabric type.

Hi! Thank you so much for theses charts! I have been searching forever for something like this. Can you tell me if these measurements are for finished products or these are the actual measurements of the body?
admin says
These are body measurements, you should allow ease depending upon the garment being made.
Tiffany says
Is the back to waist from the bottom of the neck? Thanks.
admin says
Yes it is.

I startet to crochet baby dresses and sine i have no little girs i have some problems wits sizes. I’ve been searching for a size chart for so long… this is the best. Still i have a question. I dont’t know how many chains or cm (maby inches) are needed at the begining of the dress (around the neck). could you help me please?
admin says
Hi Dana, I’m glad you find my chart useful. As for beginning chains, it will differ based on yarn/hook you are using plus style and design. You may want to consider taking a class on garment construction to assist. But as a general rule, I start out with enough chains to achieve the final measurement that I need. Hope that helps.

Hi,
I have a similar question.
On the chart it says neck width is 3″ for newborn, can the dress slide through the baby’s head? Will it not be too small?
Do apologise for my rather stupid question, but I’m still confused.
admin says
The neck width refers to the size of the opening (across from one side to the other) when the item is laying flat, it does not refer to the circumference around the neck. Hope that helps.

Thank you! I have been knitting and crocheting for newborn charities since I retired 20 years ago and this is slightly different from the chart I have been using, which is an inch or more less than yours. I have felt that some of the sweaters and socks were a little too small and now I am sure of it! Woe is me! Thank you for your work in putting this chart together!
admin says
Oh thank you for the nice words. I hope the chart works well for you.

Wooohooo!!!!! Thank you so much !

Just what I needed… My baby-wear line thanks you 🙂
Rebecca Zicarelli says
This knit-wear designer thanks you from the bottom of my heart! I have every book ever published about knitting design. They don’t have size charts. And the craft-yarn council’s charts don’t have neck measurements. I’m working on a deadline, and due to your generosity, I’ll meet it. I’m really grateful.
